We have identified a germ-line specific innexin gene in Ceratitis capitata, Ccinx-5. RNA interference of this gene resulted in sperm-less males. Sperm-less males are able to induce oviposition in females and to reduce remating tendency. Oviposition tendency in females mated to sperm-less males is higher compared to females mated to control males. The expression of a set of mating-responsive genes changes in females mated to sperm-less males.
