We examined effects of a shade coffee certification on forest quality in Ethiopia. We employed the matching method to control for selection biases. We used remote sensing data to gauge the change of forest area. A certification program had a positive impact on reducing forest degradation. Program is also effective in alleviating degradation in the surrounding areas.
