An English as a foreign language collaborative writing course applying the attributional retraining technique is proposed.

Nursing students' writing performance improved significantly after the AR instruction.

Nursing students' perceived competence in writing increased significantly after the AR intervention.

At post-test, nursing students’ learning progresses had moderating effects on their perceived competences in writing.

Teachers are advised to be aware of how students' attributions can affect their learning and achievements.
