Spatial distributions of β-cyclocitral and β-ionone in the sediment and overlying water of the west shore of Taihu Lake

Large amounts of algal residue accumulate along lake shore, then ferment and become malodorous. Nutrients in the sediment are bound up with the production of β-cyclocitral and β-ionone. Reed roots not only absorb nutrients but also absorb β-cyclocitral and β-ionone. Removing algae and dredging sludge might reduce the taste and odor problems.
