We describe a new yeast-like microalga Prototheca from Nara, Japan. Its habitat was the Takamatsuzuka Tumulus stone chamber interior. Analyses of phenotypic and molecular characters support P. tumulicola sp. nov. Our findings are noteworthy from the standpoint of Prototheca ecology.
