This article is based on an investigation into grain stores in Chongwen District, Beijing. The authors find that state-run grain stores are in severe debt, and do not know how to survive in the coming market economy. On the basis of their investigation, the authors analyse the problems of the grain store system, predict future trends of consumption, and propose some adjustments and resolutions that could help the grain stores to get out of the crisis.
