Botryococcus braunii Showa was cultured with 2-azahypoxanthine (AHX). AHX increased secondary carotenoids while it reduced extracellular hydrocarbons. Residual nitrate content in medium was significantly higher in AHX-treated culture. AHX caused a mimic of nitrogen deficiency without severe retardation of algal growth.
