Crystal structure of ChuY of uropathogenic E. coli was determined at 2.4 Å resolution. ChuY has high structural homology with human biliverdin and flavin reductase. ChuY has flavin mononucleotide (FMN) reductase activity using NADPH as a cofactor. A chuY knockout strain showed reduced survival potential in mammalian cells. ChuY plays a role in heme homeostasis and the virulence potential of E. coli CFT073.
