Principal neuron in medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) receives a single presynaptic input via large calyx-shape presynaptic terminal. We have investigated developmental changes of synaptic transmission in MNTB in neonatal rats between postnatal days 4 and 13. EPSCs were recorded in each postnatal days, and decrease of coefficient of variation of amplitude of EPSCs was observed. On the other hand, amplitude of mEPSCs was not changed in these age of animal. These results suggested that release probability of neurotransmitter increase with postnatal development. We further investigated the factors which cause the postnatal increase of release probability.
