The cytotoxic effects of carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles (CEINs) were examined in murine glioma cells (GL261).
These nanoparticles induce mitochondrial and cell membrane targeted toxicities.
They also affect the cell cycle progression in the S and G2/M phases and mitochondrial membrane potentials.
The CEIN samples, especially the raw nanoparticles, promote some pro-apoptotic events.
The doses of CEINs administered and especially the surface composition of these nanoparticles are critical determinants of different cytotoxic responses in GL261 cells.
