Grafting-from cellulose nanocrystals via photoinduced Cu-mediated reversible-deactivation radical polymerization

A controlled photoinduced polymer grafting method from CNCs is presented. The method uses 50× less Cu catalyst than traditional controlled grafting methods. Purification of modified cellulose nanocrystals is facile and fast. Modified CNCs contain 40–85 wt% polymer based on targeted degree of polymerization.
