Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) modified by a cationic surfactant (hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA)) showed good compatibility with the UV curable high solid content wood coating system.

Modified CNC improved barrier and optical properties of resulted nanocomposite coatings.

The dispersion quality of modified CNC in the matrix was a function of CNC loading level.
