Binder-free MoS2/Mo electrodes are fabricated and MoS2 layer thickness can be readily tuned.

Cocoon-like MoS2 is obtained by hydrothermal sulfurization of MoO3 microparticles.

MoS2 nano-cocoons show preferentially exposed edge sites and rich structural defects.

Mo-supported MoS2 cocoons exhibit outstanding catalytic performance for hydrogen evolution.
