Laboratory investigation of ability of oil-based friction modifiers to control adhesion at wheel-rail interface

The performance of oil-based FMs was studied by a ball-on-disc tribometer. The lasting effect of FMs increases with increasing amount of FM applied. The content of metal particles seems to be a crucial factor influencing adhesion. Adhesion was critically low even at low speeds under fully flooded conditions. The predominant wear mechanism for dry contact and FMs seems to be scoring.
