We analyzed by using complementary analytical methods (XRD, SEM–EDS, FTIR and Raman) ground layers of Coimbra workshop bringing a profound chemical study of the materials;
SEM–EDS analyses allowed to obtain information about the inorganic component of the matrix of the ground layers to its characterization;
XRD, FTIR and Raman quantitative results allowed to identify compositional differences between ground layers suggesting a multidisciplinary method for identifying different phases of ground layers production;
FTIR imaging allowed the characterization and location of some binders, proving to be a good identification and characterization of organic binders in ground layers study;
Differences between the examined groups were found, giving important information on one of the most significant Portuguese painting workshops;
