Diary study examining the determinants of empathy in (text- and image-based) CMC. Participants reported greater cognitive than affective and compassionate empathy. Situational factors more important than individual differences in predicting empathy. Discrete contextual profiles for cognitive, affective, and compassionate empathy. Greater diary empathy predicted improved ratio of perceived CMC/face-to-face empathy.
