A bioelectrochemically-assisted CW (BECW) was used to remove nitrate in wastewater. Denitrification performance of BECWs under open- and closed-circuit were compared. Completely autotrophic denitrification was obtained with organic-free influent. Microbial communities were revealed by high-throughput 16S rRNA pyrosequencing. Thiohalophilus and Clostridium sensu stricto were responsible for nitrate removal.
