Children privilege phonology over semantics in noun class learning.

We use artificial language experiments to investigate potential mechanisms.

When phonological and semantic cues conflict, adults use the more salient cue.

However, less salient cues are preferred when they are available earlier.

Child learners may thus privilege phonology because it is accessible before meaning.
