Getting Likes, Going Viral, and the Intersections Between Popularity Metrics and Digital Composition

Posting and sharing scholarly work to social networks poses problems for the determination of impact and assessment. 47% of undergraduates asked to describe how they determine if the information in a YouTube video is reliable mentioned the number of views or likes the video had previously accrued. Calls attention to the practice of reading and writing texts posted to social media networks, giving specific attention to contagious content, popularity metrics, and the processes and purposes of virality. Undergraduates in an upper division composition course learn to compose a video remediation of a technical text, and attempt to make that video go viral.
