Carbon dot/aerogel hybrid prepared via a new in situ synthesis route. Properties of both carbon dots and aerogel retained in the composite material. Fluorescence emissions of embedded carbon dots affected by adsorbed aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Changes in fluorescence response dependent upon electron donating/withdrawing properties of the aromatic VOCs. Carbon-dot-aerogel matrix distinguishes between isomers of phenylenediamine.
