Examining freeze/thaw effects on performance and morphology of a lightly cemented soil

The role of morphology changes on the performance of a lightly cemented soil was investigated after freeze/thaw. Varying degrees of damage of the soil-cement samples under a range of compaction water contents was observed. Optical microscope images on thin sections of the samples showed cracking to be a prominent damage mechanism. Cracking appears to be the root cause of the damage observed, not frost lens formation.
