With the objective of assessing the representability of current signal on modeling of bead geometries, a series of experiments were carried with GTAW under parametric conditions in which the RMS values were increased while the Mean values were kept the same and vice-verse. The weight of each current representation on bead geometry was searched using penetration, fused area and bead width as responses. To confirm the results, the potential heat transferred into the plate was estimated by cryogenic calorimetry and the weights of current representations were also assessed. It was concluded that both forms of current representation (Mean and RMS values) must be used if a more precise model of bead geometry is pursued, at least for GTAW with no material feeding.
