A cellulose monolith with hierarchically porous structure was fabricated. Fabrication was achieved by phase separation of cellulose acetate and hydrolysis. The hierarchical morphology can be controlled by tuning fabrication parameters. The cellulose monolith can be modified easily by a series of functional groups.
