This paper contributes to an ongoing literature understanding why individuals contribute to campaigns and in general. We document the persistence in giving across primary and general elections within the same cycle. This persistence decreases when campaigns are particularly negative in the primary portion of the election. This suggests that when candidates within the same party attack one another, initial supports are less likely to back their party.
