The Larroussius subgenus contains sand fly species which are important vectors of the protozoan parasite Leishmania.
Morphological identification, especially of females, is difficult and may pose obstacles during epidemiological surveys.
The identification of wild caught Larroussius sand flies, using a combination of morphology and COI PCR-RFLP, is presented.
Molecular Identification results were confirmed by DNA barcoding and Bayesian phylogenetic analysis.
