Corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) peptides evolved in at least three major phases. Lampreys have CRH, UI and Ucn3 genes but we were unable to identify a Ucn2 gene. Lamprey CRH receptors cannot be classified as either type 1 or 2. Lampreys have a functional CRH stress response system, likely at an early stage of evolution.
