Biotic desiccation cracks can be distinguished from abiotic crack networks. Biomat inhibits clay induced cracking, resulting in incomplete polygonal networks. Biomat colonized clay-rich sediment produces fewer, but larger crack polygons. Heterogeneities of the biomat produce irregularities in the crack network.
