Soil water content and nitrogen fertilization significantly increased the studied parameters.

High radiation use efficiencies and low light extinction coefficients were found.

Stomata regulation might explain the drought tolerance of giant reed.

The instantaneous water use efficiency was improved at mild soil water availability.
