The indentation imprints were analyzed to study the plastic behavior of coatings.

A finite element method in conjunction with nanoindentation tests was applied.

Validation of simulation with experimental maximum loads resulted in multiple solutions.

The flow curves of HPPMS CrN, AlN and CrN/AlN-multilayer coatings were simulated.

Nanostructured CrN/AlN showed high resistance against plastic deformation.
