Potential of the ionic liquid, C16mimBr, in reducing interfacial tension between oil and aqueous system was studied. C16mimBr was found to have higher potential than conventional cationic surfactant, CTAB, under harsh salinity conditions. Improved oil recovery rates when using C16mimBr as surfactants in a CEOR process were attributed to the formation of emulsions. Occurrence of emulsions was confirmed by performing video microscopy of fluid flowing through microchannels.
