Mild traumatic brain injury activates matrix metalloproteinase 2 and stromal cell derived factor 1α. Oxidative stress has significant role in the activation of matrix metalloproteinase 2. Matrix metalloproteinase 2 cleaves SDF-1α to generate a neurodegeneration causing fragment. MMP2 cleaved SDF-1α induces caspase-3 and causes apoptotic cell death.
