Dinuclear copper(II) (1) and zinc(II) (2) macrocyclic complexes were synthesized by the cyclocondensation between sodium 2,6-diformyl-4-chlorophenolate and 1,3-diaminopropane and the subsequent transmetallation with metal salts, and spectroscopically characterized. The crystal structures of both compounds were studied by X-ray diffraction techniques. In each complex, two metal atoms are located in the tetraimine macrocyclic hole with two coordinating water molecules above and below the ring. The coordination geometry around each metal can be considered as a distorted square pyramidal. Two-dimensional networks are found formed by both intermolecular and intramolecular H-bonding interactions in the crystals of 1 and 2.
