Measurements of the water vapour continuum in near-infrared windows are reviewed.

The few available measurements can disagree markedly at near-atmospheric conditions.

These disagreements are critically examined in the 1.6 and 2.1 μm windows.

The self-continuum temperature dependence differs between measurements and windows.

Possible developments in instrumentation to extend measurements are discussed.
