This paper estimates the effect of public housing demolitions in Chicago on local crime. I find that crime decreases by 8.8% within 1/4 mile of a demolition. This decrease is concentrated in violent crime. An event study analysis shows that the decrease occurs at the approximate date of the eviction of the residents. Crime decreases are largest for demolitions of high-rise and poorly maintained public housing. Demolitions in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods result in larger crime decreases.
