The Rajpura Dariba mine of Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL) is situated about 80 km north-east of Udaipur, in the state of Rajasthan, India. This mine perhaps represents the oldest mining and smelting operations in the world for the extraction of zinc metal. The Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) technique was soon introduced to the mine. The VCR method was adapted with the background of cut-and-fill mining experience in the upper levels. The basic considerations in such adaptation were: stability of the East Lode for future mining; inter-action between the original cut-and-fill stoping operation and planned VCR mining; stable crown pillars at 400, 300 and 200 m levels with maximum ore recovery; stability of the hangingwall and footwall rocks; improvement in percentage recovery of ore; stability of the structures, thus ensuring safety for men and machinery.
