A hierarchy of reduced order models is employed to analyse wave propagation in a viscoelastic layer. The measures of attenuation of free and forced waves are proposed and compared with each other. A high sensitivity of the attenuation levels to excitation conditions at high frequencies is demonstrated and explained.
