Coarse woody debris (CWD) carbon (C) cycling was examined following moderate disturbance.

Standing CWD was a large C pool following disturbance, 10× greater in size than downed CWD.

Standing dead and newly downed CWD had comparable rates of in situ respiration.

Ecosystem CWD respiration was 12.4–23.8% of ecosystem respiration 6 years after disturbance.

Stable C balance suggests respiration from other sources declined as CWD respiration increased.
