Reactions of EEA-derived cis-enedial with lysine, GSH, or cysteine produced two types of protein adducts, including pyrrole and pyrrolinone derivatives. Cysteine- and lysine-based protein adductions with the reactive intermediate of EEA were observed in vitro and in vivo. Protein adductions were associated with EEA-induced hepatotoxicity.
