Identified an intraslab seismic activity beneath the Kii channel region. Intraslab seismic activity is related to age and spreading rate of subducting plate. Epicenters of recent large earthquakes are near the edge of a high-velocity body. Subducted seamount off Cape Muroto has an areal extent of about 15–20 km. Velocity patterns do not constrain interplate coupling or coseismic slip distribution.
