Mantle to surface degassing of carbon- and sulphur-rich alkaline magma at El Hierro, Canary Islands

The 2011–2012 El Hierro magma had high concentrations of dissolved volatiles. Primitive CO2 concentrations reached weight percent levels at depth. Extensive sulphur degassing caused reduction of the initially oxidised mantle magma. Degassing-induced reduction triggered late-stage sulphide saturation. The eruption released large amounts of CO2 and S to the local submarine ecosystem.
