Molybdenum oxide nanorods were produced by thermal CVD at low pressure.

A vapour-solid growth mechanism is proposed to explain the experimental results.

An emission of green light with a wavelength of ∼510–521 nm has been observed.

The emission of green light is due to the defects in the molybdenum oxide nanorods.
