A CN− selective naphthol derivative (1) has been synthesized and characterised. Shows visual colour change and turn-on fluorescence with CN− in DMSO/H2O (7:3 v/v). Whatman filter paper strip impregnated with 1 shows same colour change with CN−. Used as an imaging reagent for detection of CN− in A549 cells.
