A simple boronic acid derivative was utilized as a reaction-based receptor for CN⁻ in aqueous solution. The receptor showed a selective and sensitive response to CN⁻ over other various anions via nucleophilic addition of CN⁻ to the imine moiety of the boronic-based receptor.
