Infanticide pressure accelerates infant development in a wild primate

We used changes in natal coat to assess early infant development in wild colobus.

Infant males, at higher risk of infanticide, changed coats faster than infant females.

Infants changed coats faster in multimale groups (higher risk) than in unimale groups.

Infanticide pressure, not predation or feeding competition, affected development.

Accelerating development is a strategy of mothers and infants to avoid infanticide.
