Previous in vitro studies showed that muscle-derived factors, OGN and FAM5C, regulate osteoblastic differentiation. This is the first clinical study to investigate the association of serum OGN and FAM5C with bone metabolism. Serum OGN was significantly and positively associated with the presence of vertebral fractures. Serum FAM5C wasn’t associated with bone turnover markers, bone mineral density, or vertebral fractures. OGN is an important myokine linking muscle to bone, and is associated with the risk of vertebral fractures.
