Surface wave disturbance during internal wave propagation over various types of sea bottoms

A commercial CFD code ANSYS FLUENT was used to simulate internal wave propagation over various sea bottoms. The internal wave can be generated easily by a gravity collapse method.

The novel findings obtained in this study show the trends of the surface wave displacement are opposite to that of internal wave and they are nearly moving in the same phase and have same wavelength. We use different mesh sizes to simulate the case and the results of the free surface profile show no group surface waves are generated during internal wave propagation.

The resonant interaction of internal and surface waves as IWs passing various types of sea bottom are analyzed and the results indicate the internal and surface waves are moving in the same phase and the spatial variation of the waves shows both waves have same wavelength.
