Stochastic dynamics may underlie high urban soil animal biodiversity. We tested the hypothesis in holm oak woodlands in two Mediterranean cities. Soil properties, microbiology and pollution accounted for low community variance. Patterns of beta diversity were consistent with neutral models at local scales. Disturbance and environmental variation play a significant but not major role at broader scales.
