A photocaged derivative of hyaluronan was synthesized and characterized. The caged hyaluronan could release carboxyl groups upon UV to bond with H2O. It was more resistant to hyaluronidase than hyaluronan. That photocaged hyaluronan was protective against UV light. The caged hyaluronan and products irradiated by UV were nontoxic to HaCat cells.
