Micropaleontological evidence for redox changes in the OAE3 interval of the US Western Interior: Global vs. local processes

Foraminiferal data suggest the Smoky Hill Chalk was characterized by seafloor anoxia.

This interval includes a carbon isotope excursion which may be related to OAE3; however, it is relatively well oxygenated.

Extended “OAE3” black shales in the WIS and elsewhere do not constitute an “event”.

Likewise, the carbon isotope excursion that may constitute an event is not anoxic in the WIS and elsewhere.

The term “OAE3” should be rejected, and “Kingsdown Event” or Late Coniacian Event should be used instead.
