Mothers with a mood, anxiety or schizophrenic disorder were 1.2–2.8 times more likely than women without a diagnosis to have a child with autism. Mothers diagnosed with any psychiatric disorder during pregnancy were twice as likely to have a child diagnosed with autism. Reported prevalence of psychiatric disorders was far lower than population statistics, likely reflecting under-reporting in pregnant women.
